Haha too true, ok as a air hockey champion i shall ask a question… Why don’t you believe in religion?? lid of the can is open
Yay, I wanted a good question, so get ready for a long answer :D
Let me get this straight, I don’t mind spirituality, what I do mind is institutionalised religion. For example, I don’t mind someone meditating/praying/wearing special items, whatever. They are simply following their own set of rules and beliefs in order to better themselves and I respect that. It’s when people (usually belonging to a larger organisation, like the Catholic church) push their beliefs upon others and spread hatred, that I get annoyed. Not only do they cause the segregation of certain groups in the community (eg; gays), they have also caused corruption, mass killings (the witch hunts) and wars in the past. To add to this, they encourage ignorance and a lack of common sense when they reject scientific views. Scientific ideas are usually constructed on a basis of probability and evidence. They have substance. Denying such substantive views and promoting a fairytale-like view of the world and it’s creation, is quite stupid and makes you, in fact, less knowledgeable about the world.
And all the while, they have a big greedy hand in our politics. Why don’t we have gay marriage in Australia? Oh that’s right… the church would go nuts. This is why I won’t be a part of religion. If I ever did want to believe in something, it wouldn’t be on someone elses terms.
And I don’t hate religion just because I’m an athiest. In fact, I am best friends with a future priest. I’m not one of those people who gets upset by women wearing the burqa. It’s their choice, their life and their spirituality. However, if the women were angrily telling everyone to wear burqas like they do, then I wouldn’t be so tolerant.
I believe in respecting the individual and the choices they make and in being curious about other ways of life; institutionalised religion does not.
